When Benjamin was age 39 and Rhoda BALL was age unknown they became the parents of Pvt. Vernum Kenyon BARBER 1836 in Providence, Saratoga Co., NY. The 1840 Census records that indicate he had 3 children but the names of 2 are unknown at this time. The 1840 NY Saratoga Co., Galway Census shows him with a wife and three children, 2 boys (1 under age 5, & 1- age 5 to 10) and 1 girl (age 10 to 15). further research will be needed. The name on the census is Benjamin Barber Jr. Also on the 1850 Census NY Saratoga Co., Galway, he is with his father and mother and is listed as deaf & dumb. no wife present or children present? Occupation was a peddler. On the 1860 Census NY Saratoga Co., North Galway, he is with 2nd. wife Mary and is listed as Deaf & Dumb. Mary was born in Ireland and I believe from family history she was his second wife. There is a Prvt Vernum K. Barber listed in the civil war who was born ca 1836 and this most likely was his son, see my comments under Vernum Kenyon Barber. Benjamin Jr. appeared to be married two times, his first wife was Rhoda and his second wife was Mary. In 1839 Benjamin Sr. and Polly sold an acre of land to Benjamin and his wife, Rhoda, for $200. Interestling there is a Rhoda J. Barber 8 yrs old burried in the Allen Cemetery in Galway, NY bn 1861 died 1869. She could be a granddaughter of Benjamin B. & Rhoda Barber In the 1855 NY Census he is living alone and listed as a peddler and also mute! In the 1865 NY Census he is living with Mary
