881. William Alonzo11 BARBER (Frederick Ruland10, William Alonzo "Lon"9, Rev. Bradford Kenyon8, Benjamin B.7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Moses4, James A.3, James T.2, Thomas1) (#6985) was born in Monroe Co., WI 11 APR 1910. William died 15 OCT 1986 in San Diego Co., CA, at age 76.

He married Betty J. SCHIEFELBEIN 15 AUG 1937 WI. (Betty J. SCHIEFELBEIN is #7000.) Betty was born 5 OCT 1915 in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI. Betty was the daughter of Fred H. SCHIEFELBEIN and Inez SKEED. Betty died 6 MAR 1998 in San Diego Co., CA, at age 82. from Bob Barber: After hi-school, Betty attended Koehler School of Nursing at Rochester Minn., and sometime prior to graduation met & later married Wm. A.

When William was age 28 and Betty J. SCHIEFELBEIN was age 22 they became the parents of Frederick Robert "Bob" BARBER 7 SEP 1938 in Warrens, Monroe Co., WI. When William was age 31 and Betty J. SCHIEFELBEIN was age 25 they became the parents of John William "Jack" BARBER 22 JUL 1941 in Warrens, Monroe Co., WI. By F. Robert Barber: The "Gray House" museum came about after my father (Wm.A. & Betty) sold the place and the parents "migrated" west, I believe, in 1978. He sold it to one Carolyn (Wildes) Habelman, wife of one of the cranberry Habelman's, (Bobby) from Millston, as I understand it.

Up to that point it was a 'single family residence,' in which Bill, Betty, Bob (me) and brother Jack (John W. ... 7-22-41, now dec'd) resided. Carolyn bought it as an investment, and restored it to it's original "upstairs/downstairs" apartment status, with the lower level being then converted (by her) to an antique shop. For better or worse, the antique shop apparently wasn't satisfactory to her, so she re-did the lower level, returning it to a "dwelling" status, and rented it out .... the current occupant, Norman Anderson, has been there since that change (I think) .... he's there now. The 2nd floor originally had a 'maid's quarters' at the rear of the house, so plumbing, etc., was more or less in place, and it's separately rented. >>> 3 or 4 years ago, (I'm told) while Carolyn vacationed in Florida over the winter; the power (and the heat) went out, and ALL of the black iron plumbing (including the heatng piping) throughout the place, froze -- that included 10 or so hot water radiators on both floors... when it later thawed, dozens of pin hole leaks sprayed aged "black" water from the pipes on to adjoining walls and floors, necessitating an almost complete rebuild of the interior.

Long previous to this, both houses had received a "blown in" "Rock Wool" insulation treatment. Before they left for Calif., Bill & Betty had the "Gray House" (which was previously white, clapboard) sheathed in gray aluminum siding; hence the name.

William Alonzo BARBER and Betty J. SCHIEFELBEIN had the following children:

child + 1017 i. Frederick Robert "Bob"12 BARBER (still alive).

child + 1018 ii. John William "Jack" BARBER was born 22 JUL 1941.
